On the Difficulties Being Interviewed

I was recently a guest on the Reaktor Podcast Fork, Pull, Merge, Push, giving my thoughts on being a sysadmin. This is the second time i’ve been interviewed in recent times, and i can tell you that it’s a whole ‘nother beast from any other forms of communication. You might think talking with your colleagues —which it in all essence was— would prepare you for being interviewed by your colleagues, but boy, it was a rollercoaster.

Multipass and Cattle

There’s a way of thinking in devops, to treat your servers as cattle, not pets. There’s also a related idea of immutable servers. For us old school people who love our servers like our children, all this sounds very weird. But before going to why this is weird, let’s take a look at those thoughts. A pet is an animal you keep and cuddle, maintain and take to the vet, take out for walkies and love like a family member.

I Also Do Video

When i’m not a Sysadmin at work, i’m two thirds of our Stream Team, an informal group of two which is sometimes called upon when we have events of moderate complexity that need streaming. Another colleague of mine is the wizard of sound, when sound wizardry is required. Doing live multicamera video production is challenging, a bit unnerving, and fun. There are a whole bunch of things to think of.

Customising my Hugo site

I’m not very good at throwing old stuff away. On the Internet, storage space is nearly infinite (in comparison to my brain). So i rather archive than delete. I’m like a squirrel in that way. Thus, i decided that i wanted to keep my old Now posts, to turn the Now section into something akin to a blog. How easy i though it was. This site is built on Hugo, a static web site generator.

Now i need images

Updated the theme for my blog and oh goodness, now i need to have an image for each post or you’ll get my solemn figure for each entry unless i can find something nicer. I’ve already patched my site’s theme so that i can give credit to any creator who isn’t me. Now i just need to think of a nifty way to include the license of the image too.
